Q: Is it safe to travel to the border?
A: It is as safe as traveling anywhere else. We are in a group that knows the area well. Following instructions is important--again, same as travelling anywhere. Don't wear flashy jewelry, don't wander off on your own, don't bring bags of stuff to hand out in the camps, don't take pictures of people without their permission. Do wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen, bring a water bottle, be friendly with the people we meet in the camps, try to learn as much as you can, pay attention to details and stories that humanize the migrant experience. Your presence and attention to people who feel forgotten is really what we're there to offer. However, flexibility is key. If one of the leaders says it's time to go, we go. Trust in their experience. Following these guidelines, the risks to Americans are minimal. -Dr. Stephanie Madison, Co-Founder of Education Ilimitada
